Race Reports - Greeves Series 2004 review
2004 saw another successful year for the Greeves Scrambles Series. For the second year running, Ian Bain, better known for his vintage road racing exploits, clinched the Overall Greeves Scrambles Championship title aboard his 1960 Hawkstone.
The Greeves Series caters for Greeves manufactured motorcycles built from 1954-1974 and operates a bonus points system to entice every model from the early Hawkstone to the Challenger and Griffon models. This season consisted of 11 rounds and was organised in conjunction with meetings held by the Pre 65 Motocross Club (Essex and Suffolk), Mortimer Classic MCC (nr Reading) and North Devon (Atlantic) MCC. This year, over 65 riders took part, that’s 8 more than last year, a sure sign of the increasing popularity of both the series and the Thundersley built strokers.
Ian Bain’s competition came in the form of eventual second place-man Dave Godley (360 Challenger) ahead of Ian Webster (360 Challenger), Alan Farmer (380 Griffon), Mark Fletcher (380 Griffon) and Alan Goddard (380 Griffon).
Moreover, Bain secured the Pre 64 Hawkstone class championship for a second year running. Unlike in the Overall class, Bain only took the lead at the final round of the year. Adrian Dickerson (250 Hawkstone) lead for the first half of the season whilst the youngest rider in the pack, 21-year-old Michael Eustace, aboard the oldest bike in the Championship, a 1958 Hawkstone, lead up to the final round at Maylandsea, Essex.
From Round 1, Dave Godley dominated the Pre 69 Challenger class leader board, walking away with the championship as he has done for the last 4 years. Ian Webster rode brilliantly too, and although he finished in front of Godley in a number of races, a series of mechanical failures hindered his position on the leader board.
Mark Fletcher rode a consistent season and took a well-deserved first place in the Pre 74 Griffon class. Second place went to Allen Goddard, who was competing in his first full season of the Greeves Series.
A number of guests were on hand at the awards presentation to present trophies. These included Bert Greeves’ daughter, Jenny Greeves, and Johnny Giles.
Ian Bain took another two awards in the form of Rider of the Series and Best Iron Barrel Machine. The prestigious Stonebridge Shield, which every year is presented on behalf of the Stonebridge family, was awarded to Michael Eustace.
The rider grading system, which grades riders A, B or C depending on ability, added another two awards to the line up. Best Grade C Rider went to Michael Eustace and Best Grade B rider went to Brian Fletcher.
Dave Godley was awarded the most historic trophy of the day, the MCN Trophy, presented to the best Greeves Riders Association member. The MCN trophy was first awarded at the 1960 Hawkstone Park Brian Stonebridge Memorial Scramble in front of 84’000 spectators. Bryan Sharp, a then works 250 Greeves rider and receiver of the award that year, finished 8th overall and was the first rider aboard a 2-stroke to cross the line.
By contrast, the man-of-the-season was a non-rider, Dave Harper, himself a former Greeves employee, whose ambition was to start a Greeves-only Series back in 2000. As a mark of appreciation for Dave’s hard work and effort, Ian Bain made a trophy cast from Villiers engine parts and awarded it to Dave on behalf of all the series riders.
Round 1 of the 2005 series will take place on Sunday 20th March at Marks Tey, Essex. From the A12/A120 junction head south on the A12 for 2-3miles then turn left signposted to Easthorpe. The track is situated half a mile on the left. Entry is free for spectators. The meeting, organised by the Pre 65 Motocross Club, will include Pre 65 and Pre 74 classes along with rounds 1 of the Percy Tawn Memorial Pre 60 and Pre 85 Sidecar championships.
